Hunter Sisters shine as the Warriors chase BWSL Glory

The Betfred Women’s Super League has a new sister act stealing the spotlight - Eva and Ruby Hunter.

While older sister Eva has already earned recognition as a Woman of Steel contender, 18-year-old Ruby is emerging as a rising star in her own right, making her mark with Wigan Warriors.

Ruby has made the transition from academy prospect to a senior squad regular this season, including a standout performance at the 2024 Women’s Nines Finals, where Wigan triumphed over Leeds Rhinos to be crowned champions. She also made a key impact in the semi-final against Leeds, scoring Wigan’s second try of the night.

“It’s hard, you really have to work to try and get yourself on the team sheet,” Ruby admitted. “But with players like Vicky Molyneux and Anna Davies around us, that transition into the first team is so much easier.”

Ruby credits the club’s strong development systems for helping young talent progress without getting “stuck” in the pathway — a sentiment echoed by the success of both Hunter sisters this season.

Having both started their rugby journey at Orrell St James, the opportunity to now potentially share the pitch in the Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final on Sunday is a dream come true for all the family.

“My mum can’t wait!” Ruby laughed. “Me and Eva are really nervous, but the whole family is loving it.”

The bond between the sisters is evident — on and off the field. Ruby says Eva’s presence gives her confidence and support in high-pressure games.

“Whenever I do anything, I’m always looking to Eva to be like, ‘Oh, did you just see that?’ She really does hype me up in games and it makes me feel a lot better knowing that she’s there.

“It’s the best feeling having her next to me because I know that if anything ever went wrong she’s there to support me.”

With the Grand Final on the horizon, Ruby is dreaming big - and the sisters are dreaming together:

“It's the biggest game I've ever played in, but I am really looking forward to it because you can tell everyone's so excited and so hyped up for it.”

“Winning that trophy would mean everything,” she said. “Getting to do that with my sister…not many people can say, ‘Me and my sister won a Grand Final together.’ It just makes everything mean so much more.”

The Betfred Women's Super League Grand Final will take place at The Brick Community Stadium on Sunday 5 October (K.O. 5:30pm), live on Sky Sports.
