Wright signs two-year deal with the Saints
29 Sep 2025

St Helens have announced that Shane Wright has agreed to a two-year contract, making him a permanent signing and keeping him with the Club until the end of the 2027 season!
The six feet, two inches tall forward was a player that had been on the Saints’ radar for quite some time. He was initially brought in on loan from Salford Red Devils for the remainder of the 2025 season and the club have now officially secured his services.
Wright made his official debut for St Helens on Friday, 19th September 2025 in a home win over Castleford Tigers.
And after only two appearances for the Red V, Wright has already written himself into St Helens folklore by finishing off one of the most remarkable tries ever seen in the sport.
Shane finished off the ‘Left To Wright’ try, an astonishing sixteen-pass move after the final hooter, snatching a late, dramatic victory for the Saints over Leeds and booking the club’s spot in the Semi-Finals.
Commenting on his two-year contract, Shane Wright told saintsrlfc.com: “I’m buzzing! To be given an opportunity at a club like Saints just for the rest of this year was massive, but now to extend my stay for another two years — I’m over the moon.”
“It’s a great group, the boys have been so welcoming, and the coaches have made my role really clear. The transition has been very simple, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.”
Reflecting on a memorable match that ended with his ‘Left To Wright’ try, Shane puts it down to the Club’s mentality to never give in:
“It didn’t really feel real the next day, but it’s sunk in now. Honestly, I was just in the right place at the right time, and I think nearly everyone in the team on the field touched the ball, so everyone played a role.
“The slogan ‘Never Write Off the Saints’ is around the Club, it’s embedded in everyone who walks through the doors here. Saints have been renowned for doing it over the years. Luckily we could do it on the weekend.”
In closing, Wright thanked the St Helens fans for their support in his first few weeks of being a Saint.
“The fans have been great so far. It’s good to have everyone on my side already and hopefully we can keep doing good things.”
Head Coach Paul Wellens added: “Whilst he’s probably the man of the moment following last weekend’s marvellous try, we are thrilled that Shane will be staying a St Helens player for the next two years.
“Since coming into our environment, he has applied himself with the utmost professionalism and has fit in fantastically. He adds plenty of strength and power to our pack, and I’m sure he will be a brilliant member of our team going forward.”
Wright began his professional career with NRL side North Queensland Cowboys where he was named Rookie of the Year in 2019, and in 2020 helped the Townsville side win the NRL Nines. As he progressed during his early professional career, he also featured on loan for the Mackay Cutters.
A move to the UK to play in the Super League came from the 2022 season with Salford Red Devils. The forward showed tremendous utility value by playing in the back and front row, making up 61 appearances and scoring eight tries. In the 2024 campaign, he appeared in all but two matches as the Red Devils finished in fourth place, featuring in the Play-Offs.
Now, as a Saint, Wright has his future locked in with the Red V until the end of the 2027 campaign.
