Round 23 Round Up

The Final Charge got underway in exhilarating fashion as Leeds Rhinos demolished league leaders Hull KR at AMT Headingley on Thursday Night.

Brad Arthur’s side pulled off a truly tremendous performance with a terrific four-try display – an evening the Robins will most certainly want to forget.

Jake Connor opened the floodgates with a moment of individual brilliance, and just minutes later young talent Presley Cassell collected Kallum Watkins' chip kick to touch down - which had initially cannoned off the post.

The Rhinos continued to run riot by turning defence into attack and Lachie Miller was on the end of a superb score.

In the second stanza, Harry Newman became one of many stars in the Blue & Amber in Round 23, with a crucial try saving tackle on Joe Burgess, before he iced off his team’s victory with another epic try.

Tom Davies managed to grab a consolation for the visitors, in turn reaching 100 Super League tries, but it was to be Leeds’ night – with this statement win putting them well in the race for second spot, along with Wigan, St Helens and Leigh (28-06).

On Friday, there was a close contest between two sides still looking to secure their place in the 2025 Play-Offs, St Helens and Hull FC.

Saints came out firing as Morgan Knowles' raced away for the opening try and a penalty goal from Kyle Feldt put the hosts 8-0 ahead.

Davy Litten responded to ensure the deficit was reduced to just two points at the break, but another Saints penalty in the second half would extend their lead.

Moses Mbye crossed to ensure the two points went the way of the Red V, despite Super League’s current top try scorer Lewis Martin dotting down to set up a nervy ending to the match.

This hard-fought victory has Saints sitting level on points with the Rhinos – with The Final Charge now in full swing, and just four regular rounds remaining (16-10).

Over at the Leigh Sports Village, a spirited Salford Red Devils outfit pushed Leigh Leopards all the way, but it was the hosts who eventually proved too strong.

The first forty was an even game to the surprise of most, with the Red Devils taking the lead through the experienced Joe Mellor.

Tesi Niu hit back, however, and the scores remained level until the 39th minute when Ethan O'Neill reached the highest to collect a Lachlan Lam kick and touch down to put Leigh 12-6 up at half-time.

And the pressure got the better of Salford in the second stanza, as Leigh ran in five further tries to return to winning ways and keep their top two hopes alive.

Josh Charnley completed a double, while Matt Davis Bailey Hodgson and AJ Towse featured on the scoresheet in their 38-6 win.

Super Sunday saw Wigan Warriors retain second spot in Round 23 after they put Wakefield Trinity to the sword at The Brick Community Stadium (44-2).

The Warriors dominated the first half as Bevan French shone on his return from injury with a try and try assist in the opening 25 minutes - in turn reaching 100 Super League tries.

Adam Keighran and Zach Eckersley were the other scorers in the first forty, before later scores from Junior Nsemba, Jai Field, a second for Eckersley, Liam Marshall and Sam Walters rounded off a clinical performance from the champions who moved to within four points of league leaders Hull KR and officially secured their place in the Play-Offs.

A poor Trinity side never got a look in as they remain one point behind Hull FC in the race for sixth place.

Finally, Warrington Wolves’ Play-Off chances suffered a deadly blow as they were defeated by Huddersfield Giants in Round 23.

After a tight opening half of the game, a George Flanagan inspired second half, plus an Olly Russell drop goal, secured a 23-10 victory.

The Wolves find themselves five points behind sixth-placed Hull FC and need miracles to happen if they are to still make the Play-Off cut...
