Round 26 Round Up

The Final Charge towards the Play-Offs delivered more twists and turns in the penultimate round…

Catalans Dragons produced a huge surprise when they paid Leeds Rhinos a visit on Thursday Night.

The Rhinos’ five-game winning run came to an end at AMT Headingley Stadium with the ninth-placed Dragons taking control right from the off.

Ugo Tison touched down for the opening score, before Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet converted and added penalties either side of half-time.

Leeds did eventually break down a resilient Catalans defence when Ryan Hall collected Brodie Croft’s kick to cross in the corner, but Julian Bousquet was the quickest to react to a ball bouncing off the posts and slid over for the match-winning try with less than ten minutes to go.

Croft’s late score could have step up a frantic finish, but Lachie Miller missed an easy conversion, and Leeds were consigned to an unexpected defeat (8-16).

On Friday Night, Leigh Leopards secured their highest ever finish in the Super League era with an impressive 28-10 win over St Helens at the Leigh Sports Village.

This also guarantees the Leopards a home Eliminator in the upcoming Play-Offs.

Tries from Andrew Badrock, Keanan Brand, Jack Hughes, Edwin Ipape and Owen Trout contributed to a dominant win, which saw Leigh leapfrog Leeds into third place.

Saints did spark an attempted comeback when Kyle Feldt and Harry Robertson touched down early in the second half, but they couldn’t compete with a lively Leopards outfit.

The Red V will now finish the regular season in fifth place.

Elsewhere on Friday, Wigan Warriors ensured a top two finish after their demolition of Castleford Tigers.

It was an 11-try run out against a Tigers that were a complete opposite of the side that turned up in Rivals Round Returns.

Abbas Miski, Jack Farrimond, Jack Farrimond and Liam Marshall all bagged braces, with Harvie Hill, Zach Eckersley and Ethan Havard also getting on the scoresheet (62-6).

This is the Warriors’ fourth win on the spin in The Final Charge, with a home Semi-Final wrapped up and to show for their efforts...

There were further shocks on Saturday as Wakefield Trinity well and truly stunned league leaders Hull KR.

A win for the Robins would have confirmed top spot and seen them officially win the League Leaders’ Shield, but a top performance by Trinity meant Willie Peters’ men will have to wait until Round 27 before any real celebrations can begin.

The hosts were, astonishingly, 26-0 up at the break after scoring four unanswered tries through Jake Trueman, Mason Lino, Max Jowitt and Cameron Scott.

The Robins managed to reply through Arthur Mourgue and Oliver Gildart in the second half but were completely out enthused by their opponents on the day (28-12).

This huge win gives Wakefield strong hopes of finishing in the top six as they continue battle with Hull FC for the final Play-Off spot.

Meanwhile, Hull KR need to beat Warrington Wolves, in order to lift the Shield at Sewell Group Craven Park on Thursday.

Hull FC kept their Play-Off hopes alive with a convincing win over Warrington Wolves.

The Black & Whites are still in the chase for sixth place as they eased passed a struggling Wolves with an energetic display.

Marc Sneyd may have got the visitors on the board to begin with, but four tries in just over fifteen minutes put Hull in good stead.

Lewis Martin, Denive Balmforth, Aidan Sezer and Harvey Barron all produced first half tries, before Jordan Lane and Zak Hardaker help round off a crucial victory in the later stages (34-2).

John Cartwright’s side must beat the Dragons in Round 27, while hoping Wakefield lose out to Salford the following night - if they are to have any chance of clinching the Play-Offs at the final hurdle.

Then, on Sunday, Huddersfield Giants were at home to Salford Red Devils, in a game dedicated to Leroy Cudjoe’s final farewell, who recently announced his retirement at the end of the season.

It was a special day at the Accu Stadium as they celebrated their club legend, and made even more special as the hosts managed to get a victory.

After a closely contested first forty, late tries from Adam Swift, Jacob Gagi and Kieran Rush put the game firmly to bed, before Cudjoe fittingly converted the final goal of the afternoon (22-8).
