BWCHSL: Round 9 Round-Up

Round 9 of the Betfred Wheelchair Super League proved another eventful weekend in the calendar as Betfred Challenge Cup Finalists faced off ahead of this weekend’s Final.

Opening the matches were Edinburgh Giants and London Roosters who met for the first of their two games on Saturday. It was a valiant effort from the Giants who put up 28 points against the Roosters’ 52.

Heading into the second game, the Giants pushed hard to further narrow the scoreline.

But London came out fighting in Sunday’s game giving Edinburgh no room for error and widening the scoreline to 68-6.

Saturday’s second game saw Halifax Panthers take on Leeds Rhinos in their final game before they face off for the season’s first piece of silverware.

The Panthers headed into the break with a strong lead at 46-18 after breaking through the Rhinos’ defence.

Needing a massive second half, Leeds came out fighting, finishing the game on a massive 42 points.

But it wasn’t enough to match the Panthers’ substantial first half, and they finished the game at 62-42 with a huge win heading into the weekend’s final.

Sunday saw Sheffield Eagles host Wigan Warriors before Hull FC faced off against Bradford Bulls.

The Eagles got off to a flying start as Stephen Reilly scored in the left corner after a series of errors from the Warriors.

Jack Heggie levelled the score for Wigan shortly after, but the side continued on their slow start before finally hitting their stride through Oran Spain.

After picking up the pace dramatically, the Warriors headed into the break with the lead at 46-10.

As the second half kicked off the Cherry & Whites picked up where they left off, putting on a dominant display until they conceded three tries in the final 15 minutes.

Despite lacking defensively at the end, the confidence remains high in the Wigan squad having captured the win at 30-86.

Elsewhere, Hull FC took on Bradford Bulls in what was arguably the closest game of the weekend.

Despite not having a win under their belt yet this season, the Bulls put on a massive performance against the Black and Whites to narrow the scoreline dramatically since their last meet in Round 5.

The Bulls fell just short of FC finishing the game at 50-43 but head into the next round with their heads held high from significant improvements across the season.
