Daryl Powell hailed a “pretty special performance” after Wakefield Trinity stunned Wigan Warriors to book their place in a first-ever Betfred Super League Grand Final.
Trinity produced a display for the ages to overcome the League Leaders’ Shield winners at The Brick Community Stadium, completing one of the biggest upsets of the Super League era and continuing a remarkable journey under Powell.
But for the Wakefield boss, the belief that his side could topple the reigning champions was there long before kick-off.
“Our mentality was we think we can come here and win. I thought we were superb today,” Powell said.
“I just think, you know, we completed it 100% second half, 94 in the first half that we've won a raw game. That's so tough to play against that. Teams don't do that to Wigan.”
“Obviously they're superb, you know, they've had an unbelievable year, but I just thought we were unbelievable tonight ourselves.
“I thought we started a little bit shaky, but after that, once we got our teeth into the game, I thought we were superb.”
Asked where the performance ranked among those produced by his teams during his coaching career, Powell admitted it would take some beating.
“There were some games when I was coaching at Castleford that were immense games, but to come to Wigan on a big stage like this and do what we've done today is a pretty special performance.”
Wakefield’s achievement carries extra significance for a club preparing for its maiden Super League Grand Final appearance, and Powell believes the moment extends beyond Trinity themselves.
“I think probably special for the game as well as it is for us,” he said. “For us, this is new, you know, a great opportunity for us.
“We won't get too carried away with today, that's for sure, you know, just dig our heels in next week.”
